Here at Cherry Valley Organics, we believe in using plant extracts straight from the source as much as possible.  Although comfrey does contain PAs (pyrrolizidine alkaloids), we take a number of meaningful actions to get levels of PAs as low as possible in our products, while still maintaining the powerful benefits of comfrey:

1) We only use comfrey leaves, never roots.  The roots contain the highest levels of PAs.

2) We grow only Symphytum × uplandicum (‘Bocking 14’ cultivar), which naturally contains significantly lower levels of PAs as opposed to common comfrey.

3) We only use 2nd and 3rd cut comfrey leaves in our salves.  What this means is that we allow the plant to grow normally until midsummer and then we mow the plants down after they've flowered.  We never use leaves in our products picked during or right after flowering as those contain the highest PAs.  After mowing, we allow the plants to grow young leaves again (takes about 4-5 weeks).  We only pick these non-flowering young leaves for the lowest PA levels.

4) We handle the harvested leaves gently to minimize injury and bruising that can cause changes in alkaloid concentrations.  We then dry the leaves quickly in a single layer at <100°F (38°C).

We have not yet had our products lab tested to verify that they are PA-free (aka PA-reduced), but it's something we are considering for the future.

We only recommend products containing comfrey for topical use on intact, unbroken skin.  We never recommend systemic or internal use.
